Focus on Android !!!

We keep hearing that a lot of OEMs are working on Android smartphones, even though only a few have made it to market. There is an explosion of Android phones set to appear this year and early next year. Phone maker HTC is one of the biggest players in the smartphone world, and the largest maker of Windows Mobil phones around. It produces some of the most popular phones on the market, the Touch and Touch Pro among them.

HTC was the first on the Android train, producing the original T-Mobile G1 and the recent myTouch 3G for the carrier. The company has made it clear that it believes Android is a large part of their future phone development, and a rumor coming out of Asia indicates how large a role Android might play. According to DigiTimes, HTC intends to make Android the platform of choice on over 50 percent of its future phones. This fits in with what we see from HTC, and if true this is a big blow to Windows Mobile, the platform on the major portion of HTC’s lineup for some time.

Time to step into Moon….

Google Inc. is offering a more wide-ranging view of the Moon, 40 years after humans first landed there.

To commemorate Monday's anniversary of the Apollo 11 crew's first steps on the lunar surface, Google Earth is adding a guided moon tour with astronauts Buzz Aldrin and Jack Schmitt, who was a pilot on the later Apollo 17 mission.

The free software also offers panoramic images shot by the Apollo astronauts, new video footage and other features.

The new features are available with the Google Earth 5.0 download. Some images already have been available through Google's online mapping service at http://www.google.com/moon/

Explore the Moon like Neill Amstrong… Happy Exploring….

HTC Fixed!

HTC has issued a security fix for a Bluetooth vulnerability that exposed to risk all the information on a user's handset.

The vulnerability was found in a Bluetooth driver, obexfile.dll, and if affects the company's smartphones running Windows Mobile 6.0 and 6.1 including the popular Touch Diamond, Touch Pro, and Touch HD. The exploit requires the phone's Bluetooth to be turned on and for the user to enable Bluetooth file sharing. A hacker could then move the shared folder into other folders. With this, an attacker could have access to phone numbers, photos, and other data, as well as upload malicious code to the handset. Users of HTC devices can download the fix from HTC's Web site, and transfer it to their handsets via Microsoft (NSDQ: MSFT) ActiveSync or Windows Mobile Device Center. HTC users can alternatively limit their vulnerability by turning off Bluetooth entirely, or by disconnecting from any device that is not already paired with the handset.

The flaw was originally discovered by security researcher Alberto Moreno Tablado earlier this year, and he said he notified the company of it in February [We also discussed the same in our previous posts]. He said there was no response, so he took the news public this week. The official fix came out shortly after the public disclosure.

As consumers increasingly carry large amounts of personal data on their handsets, security experts are growing concerned that hackers will target these devices. There has not been a massive attack yet like those targeting desktop PCs, and that's partly because there are so many different mobile phone operating systems.

But the leading smartphone OS, Symbian, has already seen a few small-scale attacks, and one of exploit enabled criminals to steal money from phone accounts.

Samsung I7500 vs HTC Hero

HTC Hero

Samsung I7500

Its not a review of the above two sexy. Only by look, which one is good. I was pretty much sure that Samsung I7500 was the one in Android, but after the HTC Hero got released, I am in doubt. Now, I feel HTC Hero looks much better than the Samsung. What do you say? Share your comments...

HTC Smart Phones? Pls Be Safe !!!

HTC smart phones vulnerable to Bluetooth file sniffing

If you own a mobile phone made by HTC and connect using Bluetooth, there's a decent chance security researcher Alberto Moreno Tablado can rummage through sensitive files stored on the device using a critical bug in some of its wireless device features.

The directory traversal flaw resides in the File Transfer Profile (OBEX FTP) service that's built in to the Bluetooth stack implemented by HTC, Tablado writes here. It allows an attacker to move from a phone's Bluetooth shared folder into other folders and affects HTC handsets running versions 6 and 6.1 of the Microsoft Mobile operating system.

"Microsoft states this is a 3rd party driver developed by HTC and installed on HTC devices running Windows Mobile, so the vulnerability only affects to this vendor specifically," Tablado says. "A remote attacker (who previously owned authentication and authorization rights) can use tools like ObexFTP or gnomevfs-ls from a Linux box to traverse to parent directories out of the default Bluetooth shared folder by using ../ or ..\\ marks."

Getting the required authentication or authorization rights may be easier than it sounds. Paring the HTC handset with a Bluetooth device should do the trick, but more sophisticated techniques will also work. They include sniffing the Bluetooth pairing, cracking the linkkey or spoofing the MAC address. Once the needed privileges are acquired, an attacker can remotely read or overwrite virtually any file stored on the device in a way that's completely transparent to the victim.

How to save fuel

As all of us know, fuel prices are going up and down. I remembered last year around June, the crude oil price was around $140USD. It has been reduced to somewhere around $40USD. Anyway the price will go up in near future. There are few alternatives that we can do instead of worrying and looking into crude oil price.

Alternatives:
  1. Stop Driving – for those who have been thinking like it’s crazy and crude oil price goes somewhere and will not able to afford the cost, stop driving your car or bike. Try on walking, cycling or hoping on bus for short trips.
  2. Pooling method – for those who feel we can accommodate others in our vehicle, try to use pooling method. I mean the car/bike pooling. So that you can share the fuel expenses.
  3. Change the way of Driving – it is possibly the immediate option that we can adjust. I hope, you can improve the fuel economy by adjusting your driving habit.

Here are some tips on what we can do to change the driving habits and how we can save fuel.

  • Follow the recommended maintenance: It is very important to follow your vehicle manufacturers recommended maintenance or servicing advice. It is not only increases your vehicle’s performance, but it will improve your fuel economy as well
  • Drive smoothly: Aggressive driving will use as much as more fuel than what actually requires. The minimum of heavy braking and accelerator, the more you save fuel. Try to avoid rush driving. Take some extra time to reach the destination with smooth driving and steady manner. This helps you to save fuel as well as to reach your destination safely.
  • Use highest gear: Lowest gear gives you greatest power but result in more fuel consumption. So try drive at the highest gear when you are at steady speed to improve your fuel economy.
  • Avoid excess idling: When a vehicle is on idle state, it is consuming some fuel. Turning engine off during the idle state helps you to save the extra burning fuel. If you are waiting in traffic signal or waiting to pick up some one, it is more efficient to switch off the engine.
  • Avoid excess pressure on tires: The excess pressure on tires increases the vehicles weight which directly associates with fuel consumption. So maintain appropriate tire pressure as recommended by your vehicle’s manufacturer.

These tips are not only helps you to save fuel and money, but also the earth. Enjoy Riding!

Mobile number beginning with 8!

The growth of mobile phone market in India has reached a stage that the department of telecommunications has exhausted cell phone numbers beginning with 9. Soon, mobile phone companies are expected to issue cell phone numbers beginning with 8.

Moreover, the 95 sub-level of telephone numbers was earlier reserved for trunk calls or STD dialling within a telecom circle. Now these numbers has begun to be alloted to cellular operators. The country’s cellular subscriber base has been growing substantially over the last couple of years, which led to the exhaustion of the existing sublevels of 9.
